Trend to Try: Purple Lids + Red Lips

While surfing the web recently (as I do on the daily), I came across this fun picture on thebeautydepartment.com.  I think it’s a really fun color combination that I never really see much of. So I decided a little “Trend to Try” post was in order.

I couldn’t quite decide which variation to try, so I thought I’d try them all out!  Why not, right?!

Hint
I just smudged a little of Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil in Ransom
along the lash line and blended it out with my fingers
Modest
I used the lightest purple in the Coastal Scents 88 Palette and lightly sweeped it over the lid
Extreme
I used Sugarpill's Poison Plum on an angled brush to create this purple shadow shape
and reused the lashes from my Adele post

Would you wear this look?  Which version?  I really enjoy doing these “Trend to Try” posts because it’s fun to take something you see on the runways or magazine and try them out in “real life.”  “Real life” meaning on a non-model, everyday girl--like me!

If you liked this post, you can find some of my other “Trend to Try” posts here!

Add a little spring to your work makeup routine!

If you’re like me and work in an office environment full-time, you have to keep your look “professional.”  That goes for everything: your wardrobe, your hair (even though personally I’ve had feather extensions and dyed the tips of my hair rainbow colors…I know it’s not really “professional”), and of course your makeup!  This can be a total bummer especially during the spring and summer when makeup brands are putting out tons of fun colors! Hot pinks, corals, purples, oranges, teals, blues, greens… they’re just too fun and pretty to skip because we have to keep it boring…I mean professional at work.  With that being said, lets be for real: we can’t wear fluorescent shadows and bold orange lips to the office.   We have to keep it classy and put together, BUT it doesn’t have to be all neutrals.  Here’s how we’ll pull it off…

Exciting Eyeliners

Here I'm wearing Minted Eye Kohl by MAC
-The trick to pulling of exciting eyeliner for work is to pair it with neutral eyeshadows. Keep the eyes basically nude with a little definition in the crease and line the lashes with the fun color.  Make sure the eyeliner is thin and not winged out too far on the sides.  No Amy Winehouse-ing it with the purple eyeliner for work—that doesn’t work.
-Another option would be to keep your black liner on top and put the spring colored eyeliner under the eyes on the lower lash line or in the water line! I love a bronzy lid color with a pop of teal or blue underneath!  It’s so pretty!  Again, don’t bring the color down too far or it will lose its appropriate-ness.
-Fun colors to try: greens, blues, teals, purples, and golds!

Bright Eyeshadows
Fun hot purple eyes toned down with a light brown in the crease.
I used a Yaby eyeshadow in Purple Elephant (ES015)
See!  Still professional!
-If you want to use a pastel colors like pinks or lavenders, try using a light wash of it all over the lid and blending up and out into the crease.  It will be a hint of color without being too “in your face.”  Finish with a black or brown liner and mascara and your good to go!
-For brighter colors stick to the lid only.  Never go above the crease, otherwise you’ll look like you’re going to a club instead of your cubicle.
-Using and angled liner brush you can also use your brighter spring and summer shadows as an eyeliner!  Follow the same rules above in the “Exciting Eyeliners” section and it will be perfect! (To get the biggest color punch from your shadows, press them over a white eyeliner or an eyeliner in a similar shade.)
-To tone down a bright lid colors use a light brown shade to contour the crease and to apply on the outside corner of the eyes, blending inwards. This will keep the bright shadow work appropriate with no worries.
-Fun colors to try: oranges, pinks, purples, blues, greens

Brilliant Blushes
I mixed MAC's Pink Swoon and Peaches
and added the By Candlelight as a highlight
-Rosy cheeks are definitely in for spring! Nothing brightens up your face and makes you look fresher and more awake.  Not to mention younger!
-If you’re wearing a simple eye look (like I usually do for work, because I’m too lazy in the mornings), go for a little heavier/brighter blush then you would normally wear.  Starting at the apples of the cheeks and sweeping back to the hair line.
-If you’re sporting colored eyeliner or eyeshadow that day, mix your blushes by contour your cheeks with a blush like Harmony by MAC or your bronzer, then apply your favorite spring blush on the apples of your cheeks only.  This will give your cheeks a little color without competing with the eyes.
-Add a highlighter to the tops of your cheekbones!  It will give the cheeks a fresh, spring morning glow.
-Fun colors to try: Hot pinks, peaches, corals, and even bright purple-pinks!

Lively Lipsticks
Here I'm wearing Full Speed by MAC
-This is the time of year when lipsticks really becomes fun!  I think wearing a spring color on the lips is the easiest and safest way to bring spring into the work place.  Not to mention, it takes the least amount of time in the mornings to apply—SCORE!
- Wearing a pop of color on the lips while keeping everything else clean and fairly neutral looks so classy to me!  Plus, I think it’s definitely work appropriate!  My favorite way to wear it is with very groomed brows, black eyeliner with a little flick on the outside, and a bright lipstick of your choice.  It’s a classic!
-Create a stain with your lip liner by lining and filling in the lips.  Then apply the lipstick and blot.  Reapply the lipstick and blot again.  This will keep the lipstick in place for hours!
-For really bright shades, press the lipsticks in to the lips with your finger instead of applying it straight from the bullet.  This will tone down the shade and make it look more like tint instead of full coverage lipstick.  This trick can make any shade work appropriate in seconds!
-If you have a favorite lip liner and you can’t seem to find the perfect shade of lipstick to match, no problem!  Fill in your lips with the liner and apply your favorite colorless chapstick to moisturize the lips and add a little bit of shine!
-Fun colors to try: Lip colors seem to follow the blush shades: hot pinks, peaches, corals, purple-pinks, and oranges!

I hope these tips and tricks will help you feel comfortable adding a little spring to your work makeup routine!  Besides, if you’re going to spend the money on some fun new makeup shades this season, you might as well use them as often as possible, right?!  Spring colors aren’t just for nights and weekends anymore! Whooohooo!

Who do you YouTube?!

I freakin’ love YouTube!  I spend way too much time wondering around on YouTube looking at beauty videos.  Even though I’ve been obsessed with YouTube for years now, I’m still finding new channels that I instantly love and subscribe too.  So, I thought it would be fun to give you some of my all-time favorite/can’t live without/I watch every video they put out channels!

Hair
I’m always looking for a new hairdo.  If you have haven’t searched “date night hairdo” or “voluminous hair tutorial” on YouTube, something may be wrong with you.  It’s the only way I know how to get ideas for my hair! If you’re stuck wearing the same boring hair style every day, I’m bustin’ you out of the rut!  Starting with my top 4 hair channels!

Atkristabradford – Krista owns a salon in Chicago and I LOVE her easy to follow hair tutorials.  Plus I enjoy her videos on hair care tips and tricks.
Davenmayeda – Daven is my new favorite!! I found him recently and I am constantly waiting for him to upload a new video…I can’t get enough.  Watch his videos and he’ll be your “hair BFF” too!
Itsjudytime – Judy does all kinds of beauty related videos and vlogs, but my favorites from her are her hair tutorials.  She has TONS!  If you are trying to find the perfect hairstyle for a particular event, she’s your girl. Or she’s your channel?...
Luxyhair – These are easy to follow hair tutorials, but what I love the most about this channel are their “organic” hair styles.  Organic meaning good for your hair and minimal products (sometimes not even a pony-o!).  I hope they post more and more organic hair styles soon!

Makeup
DUUHH!! Of course 90% of my subscriptions are to makeup channels. I watch everyone.  The four listed below are the people I trust/enjoy watching the most when it comes to the makeup department.  They are all professional makeup artist who really know their stuff and I feel like I learn a lot by watching their videos.

Pixiwoo (& Pixiwoomadness & Pixi2woo) – This is really 3 different channels but I grouped them together because they are all connected.  Pixiwoo and Pixiwoomadness are sisters, Samantha and Nicola Chapman (you’ll see both of them on either channel).  The majority of their videos are celebrity makeup look recreations, but they also do a variety of educational videos for makeup students.  Pixi2woo (Tanya Burr) is actually dating the Chapman sisters’ brother Jim.  Tanya covers similar topics on her channel—and I love them all!
Lisaeldridgedotcom – Lisa is a well-known makeup artist who has done everything I can only dream of doing.  She’s amazing; you have to check her out.  Go to her website, LisaEldridge.com, and browse through her portfolio to see some of her work!
Kandeejohnson – Kandee is one of the beauty gurus I’ve watched the longest.  I love all of her videos and she has a really inspirational story of how she got to where she is today.
Nikkietutorials - Nikkie does a lot of fun, over the top, but still wearable looks (Well, I would wear them but possibly not for everyone).  Plus she is hilarious!!

Other
Four out of the 5 channels listed below are makeup channels, but I enjoy watching them for different reasons…

Dulcecandy87- I love watching her put together and style outfits! Check out her beauty blog for pictures of her different outfits at dulcecandy.com.
jlovesmac1 - I think this girl is absolutely hilarious!! Her videos always crack me up!  It’s like watching a comedian, but in beauty videos.
Andreaschoice – I really enjoy watching this channel because…well…she’s just so dang pretty!! Not only is she pretty but she’s a twin! There are TWO girls out there that look like that!  Plus she is also hilarious, and I love to laugh.
Petrilude – This guy hasn’t really been posting videos recently but there are tons of old videos you can go through.  I really like watching him do his drag makeup, it’s absolutely amazing to me!  Seriously, you have to watch him transform into “Misty Maven.” Don’t you just love makeup?!
charliejames1975 – I’m not gonna lie, this channel looks completely sketchy and inappropriate BUT if you get past the screen shots that are the face of the videos, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.  These are the BEST workout videos out there.  They are usually 12 minute workouts and they are killer.  Sometimes I do the workouts as whole and other times I watch to get ideas for new exercises.

Please comment below or on my facebook page and tell me your favorite YouTube channels!! Seriously, I REALLY WANT TO KNOW!  I’m always in need of more channels to occupy my time!

SIDE NOTE: to comment on my blog you have to become a subscriber.  SORRY, I know that’s a pain but I had it set up so anyone could post and I kept getting these weird spam comments… No good.

Green With Makeup Envy - Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Sorry I’ve been M.I.A. for a few weeks (my bad!), but I’m back with a fun look I created with tons of GREEN!  St. Patrick’s Day is big in Columbia and everyone goes all out with their outfits, hats, hair accessories etc.  So why not do the same with your makeup?!  If any of you are going to St. Pat’s in 5 Points or any other St. Patrick’s Day party, I encourage you to do something a little “crazy” (aka AWESOME) with your makeup!

Orange lips?!  Keep reading below!
If this look is something you wouldn’t wear in public, or if you want to make it even more festive then here are a few other ideas.  Mix and match them, do one of them, do all of them together, just have fun and play!  Create your perfect look!

1.  Sport heavy thick green cat eyeliner with neutral makeup.

2.  Add some green glitter to the lids or lips!

3.  Add huge fake lashes that have green in them (maybe leftovers from Halloween?!).
4.  Accent your eyes with some green gems!  Using some eyelash glue you can easily adhere around your eyes for a little extra sparkle!

5.  Go for a gold eye look instead of green!  It’s more wearable AND you probably already have at least one gold eye shadow lying around don’t cha?  Plus it’s still festive – Hello pot-o-gold!

6.  The Irish flag is orange, white, and green so throw some orange in there!  I do love a good orange lipstick…

Or without the green eyes if you prefer.
7.  Wear really natural “pretty makeup” but do green brows!! That would be so fun!!

I think this is my favorite!
Tips:
-If you are doing heavy eyes with lots of color or glitter, do them first.  That way you can wipe away any fall out then go on to foundation.
-To make your green shadows POP, use a white base first then layer them on top. My favorite? NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk (but remember to use a primer first to keep it from creasing and to make sure it last all day long).
-The trick to eyelash glue is to let it try for at least 30 seconds before you try to apply your lashes (or gems!).  This gives the glue a chance to become tacky and stick instead of sliding around during the application.
Which option will you choose?!  Leave me a comment here or on my facebook page and let me know!

For the love of beauty and going all out (because it’s much more fun that way),
