Beachy Fashion

Two beach themed post in a row?  You betcha!  It's summer and I'm excited!

In case you missed it, here's a link to my previous post which was all about makeup for the beach (or pool, or lake, or whatever you're doing in your swimsuit this summer)!

I've always thought it's way easier to be stylish when it's not a million degrees outside.  In the fall and winter you can layer your clothing, you can spend time on your makeup and not worry about it melting right off, your hair doesn't frizz as soon as you walk outside...It's just a whole lot easier to but cute when it's cooler.  Despite all of that summer styles are my favorite! I'm really into the "effortlessly cool" look that's big right now so I thought I'd put together some things I'm looking forward to wearing this summer.  (Basically it's my check list of things to purchase/remember to pack for vacation!)

I've decided to go from head to toe, so here we go..

Hats!  They are important to protect your face and neck from too much sun, plus they are just so much fun.  I don't wear hats {ever} except for when I'm doing an activity in a bathing suit.  Weird how that happens.
big floppy hats are my favorite
Although this next option doesn't offer any sun protection, it's still super cute! It's a stylish way to hide/dress up crazy beach hair with out having to wear a hat or a boring headband!

Need to know how to tie these scarves?  Here you go.

Speaking of crazy beach hair...I have naturally wavy hair and when I'm on vacation I don't like to spend a lot of time fixing it.  If I try to do anything besides let it do what it wants it's going to turn into a hot mess.  So what do you do with weird air dried beach hair? Cute summer updos!  Plus keeping the hair up off my neck keeps me that much cooler and I really appreciate that! (Also keep these hair styles in mind for summer parties, theme park visits, sporting events...anything really.)

Here's another really cute braided updo tutorial

This one works for all hair types but looks really good on her naturally curly hair.
I'm thinking this one might be a good one for my Disney visit!

And of course throwing a few braids onto any hair style makes it perfect for summer!  They're also handy if you have shorter layers around your face or bangs!

Another good idea is to keep a hair oil or leave in conditioner spray in your beach bag to keep your hair protected and from becoming too dry.  Especially if you're swimming in the pool!  Just run it through the ends of your hair when you get of the water and you're good to go!

I really like big and colorful sunglasses for summer.  I even like to wear different shaped frames, because again, I feel like anything goes when you're in a swimsuit (is that just me?!). Although I do make sure the ones in my beach bag are super cheap because some how I always manage to ruin them before the end of summer.

I've never been one to wear jewelry to the beach (no unneeded tan lines please) but if I were going to some kind of party I would probably accessorize!

I don't know if it's just me or what, but I hate swimsuit shopping.  I've just never had a lot of luck when trying to find the perfect new bathing suit and when I have found them they were sooo expensive! This summer I lucked out with this fun Badgley Mischka suit from 6pm.com!

I'm still on the hunt for one of these retro one piece suits. LOOOVE them.

Who want's to wear a frumpy oversized t-shirt as a cover up this summer when you can find cute coverups like these for a steal?!

teal sheer and lace asymmetrical dress from F21

This is my favorite!  It's a bright coral high-low dress shirt also from F21.
I think it's going to look so breezy and flowy over any swimsuit!
Can't go wrong with a pretty white cove up!
As far as my feet go, I never wear shoes that I can't hose off before going inside (or ones that take forever to dry).  And at some point I also found it helpful if they float too...

You can't forget about your nails! I love gel nail manicures because they last so long without chipping or becoming dull and you're pedicure won't chip away from being in the sand all day!  I like using all kinds of colors (year round, not just in the summer)!

Looking at all these pictures just makes me even more excited about summer!

Beach Towel Beauty

{Did you know the first day of summer isn’t until June 20th?!  I’m going to pretend I didn’t google that and start this post of how I originally wanted to!}

Whether you’re finishing up school for the semester, planning a nice vacation, sunning by the pool after work everyday, or spending the weekends out on the boat--it can only mean one thing…SUMMMMER!  Which means it ‘tis the season for all things summery: sun, sand, swimming, sandals, swimsuits, sangria, sundresses, and sweating.  Wait…what?! That’s right, sweating.  We all do it and we all hate it.  Especially when it comes to trying to look cute for all the exciting summer festivities.  However in one quick post all your summer beauty concerns will be solved.  This post is going to give you all the tips and tricks you’ll need to keep your look fresh and fun all summer long, no matter what you’re doing!

SKIN CARE
The most important beauty product for the summer is...your sunscreen of course!  You should be wearing it daily not just when you’re planning on spending the day outdoors.  Protecting your skin is key to preventing premature aging, so the sooner you start the better.  Also, if you have any scarring or hyperpigmentation from past breakouts, it’s important to know that they will darken with sun exposure making the more noticeable.  We don’t want that!

My favorite facial sunscreen, which I use daily under my makeup, is La Roche-Posay Anthelios SX Daily Moisturizer UVA/UVB SPF 15.  Depending on how long you’re going to be outside or how often you’re going to be in and out of water you may need to reapply, so don’t forget!  Another important thing to mention is to pick a sunscreen that’s made specifically for your face. It’s been my experience that using too thick of a sunscreen on my face can cause a ton of little micro bumps to appear, which give my skin a rough texture for upwards of a week before they disappear.  It’s easy to prevent, just pick something that’s gentle enough for your face.

Don’t forget about your body!  There are millions of sunscreens out there so take your time looking them over and pick your favorite.  It’s important to remember that sunscreens aren’t buildable, meaning if you apply and SPF 15 then layer on and SPF 30, you are not wearing and SPF 45.  My favorite kinds to use are the no-rub spray ones!  They’re quick and easy!

BEACH MAKEUP TIPS

FACE
This may be scary to some, but I’m going to tell you to skip the foundation all together.  This is a classic case of “less is more.”  There’s no such thing as a waterproof foundation so anything you apply will either turn into a hot mess or come right off once you hit the water.  If you have a few problem areas that you would like to conceal, the idea is to spot treat them.  Try and choose a concealer with a waxier texture, it will be the most “waterproof.” To apply the concealer use the smallest concealer brush you have (I like to use a lip brush) and dab the concealer directly over the spots and gently pat the concealer with your finger to blend it in.  PRO TIP:  Want to double up the use of your eye primers?  Dab a little on problem areas before covering with concealer.  Just like it prevents shadows from creasing, smearing, and fading—it’ll do the same for your concealer!

I picked up this Bobbi Brown Face Touchup Palette from a CCO and I used the Foundation Stick as a concealer because it has a dryer/waxier texture.  The concealer in this palette is too creamy and wouldn't last as long in the heat.

If you like adding an extra glow to the skin, here’s another fun little trick I like to use.  Take an extra pea size amount of sunscreen and mix in a pigment color of your choice (try champagnes, nudey-pinks, silvers, golds) and dab it on top of the cheek bones, down the bridge of your nose, on the cupids bow, and under the brow bone to give the face a fresh highlight. I like using MAC’s Melon and Blondes Gold pigments for this.  (Or try mixing it in with your moisturizer for the same affect!)

Right: Melon

If you are worried about becoming oily during the day, take some blotting powders to remove any excess oil.  Another good idea is to put your favorite facial mist in your cooler!  Give yourself a refreshing mist to give your skin a quick pick-me-up and blot away any extra moisture with your towel.
This is Pangea Organics Facial Toner but I like using it as a facial mist.
BROWS
If you’re like me and your brows are basically nonexistent, there are a few options for you.
Option #1 is to use a tinted brow gel to brush over the brows to give them a little extra color and more defined shape.  Here are a few good gel options:
Option #2 would to use a waterproof brow pen/pencil such as:
Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Color ($21)
Sephora Collection Waterproof Retractable Brow Pencil ($12)

EYES
Now for the fun stuff!  For a day at the beach or laying by the pool, the most I would do is a fun colored eyeliner.  Since you’re out in your colorful swimsuit, now’s the time to pick a little more of a daring liner shade then you normally would! Think summery shades of purples, teals, pinks, blues, oranges, greens…Have fun with it!  You don’t have to match your swimsuit either, do something opposite for a fun pop of color!  You can find them anywhere, but here are a few I like:

Still Smudge Stick Waterproof Eyeliner  ($20) (what I used)
in the color Peacock.  This actually came in one of my Birchboxs!
NYC Waterproof Eyeliner ($1)
available at local drug stores
Waterproof mascaras come in all brands, so pick your favorite and roll with it. To maximize your lashes try this technique: Curl your lashes then apply a light coat of mascara and let it dry.  Curl the lashes again and follow with a thicker second coat of mascara.  For the second coat you can even try a fun waterproof colored mascara!

So fun!
 LIPS & CHEEKS
Any easy trick for summer is to double up your lip and cheek products!  If you are using a lip balm or stain this is the perfect time to let them do a little double duty!  If you tend to get a natural flush when you're out in the sun, then you can skip the cheeks and go straight for the lips.

OR you could go for a fun bold lip!  Use a waterproof lip pencil then top it with a light wash of the lipstick of your choice or a chapstick for a little extra moisture!  This is a fun option if you plan on wearing your sunglasses and don’t really want to play up your eyes! Plus lipstick is super easy to reapply with little effort and the extra layer will also protects your lips from the sun.
I used these Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains
The one the left in Cherish on my lips
The one on the right in Devotion on my cheeks for a little color
Available at local drug stores)

The Look

That's it!  I hope that was helpful and maybe you came across some info you didn't already know? Don't forget these tips and products can be useful in tons of different situations.  Think theme parks, at a baseball game, and of course at the beach!

What are you favorite summer products?

Warby Parker Frames

This post is dedicated to all my fellow glasses wearers.  Love them or hate them your glasses are totally beauty related (which is why it’s being posted on For the Love of Beauty)!  They sit front and center on your face which makes them pretty significant to your overall look.  Hopefully after reading this post you’ll find a new love for your glasses, and maybe even buy a few more pairs so you can match your glasses to outfit look instead of vise-versa for once!

Here’s is (was) my ongoing dilemma: My prescription seems to change at every appointment, and if you’ve ever purchased frames or new lenses you know how expensive it is! So, needless to say the lenses in my current frames are about…3 years old.  Woops.  Even though I often want to wear my glasses I can’t because I can’t see out of them, and  I don’t want to pay for new lenses because I know my prescription will change soon.  Well, problem solved people!

I made up my mind that my next eye appointment I was just going to suck it up and pay for new lenses and new frames, so the mad hunt for the perfect pair of frames began. I spent countless hours googling celebrities in glasses, sorting through pins on pinterest, and even just looking at all the possible eye websites I could find.  All my searching finally paid off when I stumbled across WarbyParker.com, and here’s why…

1.     Most importantly they have the style of frames I’ve been searching so hard for! (Hallelujah!)  My current frames are rectangular black rimmed glasses and I wanted some that were similar but wider/taller…if that makes any sense…
2.     I have a smaller face shape, so I was worried about if the frames would actually fit my face.  Should I take the risk and purchase them with trying them on?  Would they be too big?  Too wide? That’s when my anxiety set in until I discovered…
3.     You can order an at home try-on kit!! You choose 5 different frames you think you will like and they mail them to you!  And guess what?!  It’s completely FREE with no obligation to buy!! That’s right people, FAAA-REEEE!  You have 5 days to try them on, get some opinions, then all you do is mail them back with the prepaid postage! How amazing is that?!
4.     Then I think well crap, how do I get my prescription in my lenses once I pick out the frames?  Will I have to take them to my eye doctor?  Can they fit lenses in any frames?  Is it going to cost even more if I didn’t buy the frames for them? No worries, the frames come with your prescription in them!  All you do is fill out your prescription when you checkout with your frames!  If you are nervous about filling in your prescription wrong (like I was), don’t be.  They have all kinds of ways to ensure your prescription is right in your lenses.  You can e-mail a copy of your prescription to them, upload it at your checkout, or even call them to make sure you are doing everything perfectly.
5.     Naturally I’m thinking I’ve hit the jackpot, which means this must cost a jackpot. Nope!  All frames WITH the prescription lenses in them WITH shipping cost $95 per set of frames! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!  This is easily a half if not a third of what I would be paying at my eye doctor, and I don’t even like their frame selection (usually)!  At this price I can easily afford to get a brown pair AND a black pair!  (I’ve always wanted to do that for some reason.)
6.     Seriously, could this get any better?  YES!  They also “Buy a Pair, Give a Pair”!  If you are familiar with Toms, it’s a similar deal but with glasses!  So not only are you getting awesome frames with your prescription for a super good price, you are also helping to do a little good in this world.  (Buying that second pair seems even better now, huh?!)

If you’ve been searching for new frames, or will be eventually keep Warby Parker frames in mind.  Find more info and check out their fun selection on frames (prescription, sunglasses, AND prescription sunglasses!!) at warbyparker.com!

If anyone is interested in my new frame selection journey, here ya go!  The ones pictured below are actually from my SECOND home try-on kit...I completely messed up my first box, they were all too big.  Which is exactly why this FREE kit is AMAZING!

Pierce in Oakwood Brown

Colton in Sandalwood Matte

Zagg in Revolver Matte Black

Japhy in Sandalwood Matte

Carlen in Revolver Black

Leave me a comment and let me know which frames you like best!  Should I go with black or brown...or both?  All the frames come in multiple colors and we all know how I love options...
